Fifteen doctors received their Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery
(MBCHB) medical degrees on 30 November 2007 from the University of the Free
State. This is another achievement for service excellence to the Department of
Health as it issued bursaries to students giving them a chance to pursue health
related degrees. Bursary beneficiaries are Free State-based and will be
deployed to health facilities in the Free State.
Mr Sakhiwo Belot MEC for Health congratulated the achievers at a final year
medical students function held at Bophelo House on 7 December 2007. He
highlighted that the Department of Health has since year 2000, progressively
increased its commitment to human resource development of this province and has
since allocated more than 1 385 full time bursaries to deserving learners and
937 part time bursaries. In total R113 million over this period in the
education of future healthcare workers has been invested.
The MEC encouraged bursary beneficiaries to implement the skills attained
during training and not to be discouraged by long cues in hospitals but instead
should show empathy and dedication to their chosen careers.
