delivery in municipalities
29 August 2007
Gauteng Local Government MEC, Qedani Dorothy Mahlangu will on Tuesday, 4
September 2007, honour the most outstanding women councillors and Community
Development Workers (CDWs) and officials who have gone beyond the call of duty
to uplift the various communities in the province.
The annual Women in Local Government Awards gala dinner will be held at
Gallagher Estate in Midrand, to pay tribute and celebrate the good work done by
women leaders and officials in all the 14 municipalities in Gauteng.
Gauteng has 392 women councillors whose daunting task among others is to
build and preserve a developmental, democratic and people orientated local
government and to ensure service delivery in their respective communities.
"It has always been my dream to offer women in local government an
opportunity to showcase their achievements and share best practices in their
respective fields. Therefore, the annual Women in Local Government Awards seek
to identify and recognise outstanding women leaders and officials in local
government."
"Through these awards, we give women in local government a voice and a
platform to celebrate their successes and to also share best practices as part
and parcel of making local government work better. The inaugural Women in Local
Government Awards held in 2005 were a resounding success and building on that
we continue to pay homage to women in local government," Mahlangu said
The MEC believes in the power of women to make substantive change in the
lives of local communities, especially the most vulnerable and marginalised
section of the society.
The awards are divided into three categories namely:
* Most outstanding woman councillor
* Most outstanding woman municipal official
* Most outstanding woman Community Development Worker (CDW).
