Region (GCR) conference

Some of the world's leading experts are set to attend the Gauteng Global
City Region, Forms and Models of City Regions Governance Conference on Friday,
20 April 2007 at the Sandton Convention Centre. The conference, which will be
addressed by Gauteng Local Government MEC Qedani Mahlangu, will look at the
Gauteng GCR perspective Models of City Region Governance and the role of public
shared services in successful city regions.

The overall objective of the conference is to provide a forum to exchange
and develop knowledge, experience, concepts, theories and practice about the
nature of global city regions, their development and management and for Gauteng
leadership and practitioners to consider comparative developments in other city
regions.
The Gauteng GCR Perspective was launched last year and entails a new way of
thinking about development in the province. The joint objective of the three
spheres of government in the province is to build Gauteng as an integrated and
globally competitive city region where the economic activities of the province
complement each other in consolidating Gauteng as an economic hub of Africa and
internationally recognised city region.
The GCR conference will be hosted in conjunction with the University of the
Western Cape, Wits University and the University of Johannesburg and in
co-operation with the Forum of Federations.
