Gauteng Local Government MEC Q Mahlangu to address Community
Development Workers' graduation

27 June 2007

Gauteng Local Government MEC Qedani Dorothy Mahlangu will on Tuesday, 3 July
2007, deliver a keynote address at the graduation ceremony of Community
Development Workers (CDWs) at Gallagher Estate in Midrand. The 254 CDWs have
successfully completed community development training at the University of
South Africa (Unisa). They have recently been employed as full-time civil
servants deployed in various municipal wards in Gauteng to unblock service
delivery challenges.

They are working within all three spheres of government to ensure that
communities have access to government services and programmes and also to
inform government of the needs of the communities. The programme was launched
by Minister of Public Service and Administration Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi and
Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa in 2005 following the call by President Thabo
Mbeki during the State of the Nation Address in February 2003 that the
government will create a public service echelon of multi-skilled community
development workers who will maintain direct contact with the people where they
live and ensure that government goes directly to the people.

In 2005, 198 CDWs were awarded with certificates by Unisa. They are
currently performing a sterling job in communities where they live. The role of
CDWs as public servants include:

* linking the communities to resources such as food, medical access and
social grants
* mobilising people to identify their development needs as individuals within a
community
* ensure that communities are aware of and participate in various advocacy
campaigns around contemporary social issues.
