The Department of Public Works has noted media reports alleging that the
Department is building a private residence for President Thabo Mbeki. The
Department wishes to state the following facts for the record:
* The Department is not building a private residence for the President. The
residence is being built by the Mbeki family at their cost.
* The Department is involved in the property in so far as government policy
requires the Department to provide appropriate security infrastructure in the
official and private residences of serving and former Presidents and Deputy
Presidents.
It is regrettable that the matter is being blown out of proportion in
service of narrow political ends with the intent of casting aspersions on the
integrity of the President and African leaders in general.
The danger exists that the public agitation intended will have the effect of
threatening the safety and security of the current President, former and future
Presidents and Deputy Presidents.
