Public Works to host Built Environment Conference, 18 to 19 Jun

Built Environment Conference is ready and set for the next two
days

It's all systems go for the two day second Built Environment Conference that
is starting on 18 June, as professionals, academics, practitioners and
researchers from developed, developing and underdeveloped nations are convening
at the Boardwalk Conference Centre in Port Elizabeth. The conference which is
jointly hosted by the Council for the Built Environment (CBE) and the
Association of Schools of Construction of Southern Africa (ASOCSA) is aimed at
providing an international platform to discuss problems, challenges and
constraints affecting the built environment.

There will be an array of key speakers that includes the Director-General of
the Department of Public Works Mr Manye Moroka, the CEOs from the two
departmental entities, Messrs Ronnie Khoza from the Construction Industry
Development Board (CIDB) and Bheki Zulu of the CBE. Other speakers from non
governmental sectors will be from academic institutions such as the renowned
Universities of Johannesburg, Witwatersrand and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan and
the two Universities of Technology that of Tshwane and the Cape Peninsula. The
construction fraternity will be represented by Group 5 Construction.

The conference will among others address the following:

* an exodus of experienced professionals in the built environment
* recruitment strategy to curb the declining pool of ageing professionals
* to provide a forum for multi-disciplinary interaction between academics and
practitioners to be on par with changing trends in the profession
* to contribute to the Built Environment's Body of Knowledge (BEBOK)
* inconsistent application of fees and declining standards
* to reaffirm CBE's role in fostering alignment, serving as a nexus and
providing strategic leadership in the professions.

Other issues to be discussed are sustainable construction, education and
professional development, service delivery and customer care in the industry,
legislations and regulatory framework, international construction as well as
Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) Management.
