Public Works and National Youth Commission to hold National Youth
Consultative Forum, 20 Oct

It is all systems go for the National Youth Consultative
Forum

19 October 2006

Approximately three hundred youth delegates representing various
organisations, businesses and individuals will tomorrow, 20 October 2006,
converge at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)
conference centre for the first day of the two-day National Youth Consultative
Forum to discuss key challenges faced by young people in the construction and
property sectors.

The forum, which is a partnership between the national Department of Public
Works (NDPW) and the National Youth Commission (NYC), aims to provide further
consultation on the specifications and ideals of the Construction and Property
Transformation Charters which were signed earlier this year.

The forum is also part of the implementation process of the charters, which
among other things is targeting these two sectors that historically have been
characterised by inequalities with regard to the representation of youth,
women, Black people and the disabled.

This marks the beginning of a process to unlock South Africa's economic
potential which would in the long run immensely contribute to the Accelerated
and Shared Growth Initiative for South Africa (AsgiSA) and Joint Initiative for
Priority Skills Acquisition (JIPSA).

The National Youth Consultative Forum will engage the youth on various
strategic programmes that will ensure that their meaningful participation in
both the construction and property sectors.

The following issues are the main objectives which will be discussed at the
forum:
* creating awareness of the rationale behind the Property and Construction
Transformation Charters
* highlighting the processes involved in the implementation and development of
these charters
* providing a platform for the youth to express their views on the charters and
programmes targeted at youth development and economic empowerment
* creating awareness of opportunities within the property and construction
sectors.

In order to achieve the above-mentioned objectives, the forum will attract
participation and interest from enterprising youth, youth organisations,
private and public sector as well as youth generally interested in the built
industry.
