Integrity
9 October 2006
The Global Forum on Fighting Corruption and Safeguarding Integrity is an
intergovernmental gathering that is convened every two years. The forum will
bring together representatives from governments, international and civil
society organisations, specialists and academics to discuss measures for
fighting corruption.
The overall objective of the Global Forum on Fighting Corruption and
Safeguarding Integrity is to discuss practical and effective measures for
preventing and fighting corruption. This GFV will have a significant African
orientation, and will showcase the African anti-corruption experience and good
practices.
South Africa is the first African country to host the Forum. The previous
hosts are the United States of America, Netherlands, South Korea and Brazil.
Our meeting with the African Union is aimed at ensuring that the forthcoming
Global Forum has a significant African orientation and affords Africa an
opportunity to showcase her anti-corruption experience and good practices.
The Forum will be organised by the Department of Public Service and
Administration on behalf of the South African Government, with the support of
the Anti-Corruption Co-ordinating Committee and in co-operation with the
International Organising Committee (IOC).
The IOC is comprised of representatives from the past four hosts of the
Global Forum and international organisations such as the African Union
Commission, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and
the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
It is customary for the IOC to assist the host country with logistical and
substantive issues relevant to the conference and share past experiences and
how to improve on certain aspects of the conference.
Approximately 1 500 people are expected to attend GFV of which the majority
will be representatives from over 100 governments, including ministers. Other
representatives include dignitaries and experts from international
organisations such as the African Union Commission, the New Partnership for
Africa's Development (NEPAD) Secretariat, the United Nations and its agencies,
the European Union and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and
Development.
The Global Forum will be preceded by an Africa Meeting on Anti-corruption,
which will be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 21 - 23 November 2006. Apart
from consolidating an African position on matters that are to be discussed at
the Global Forum, the Africa meeting will also review progress in the
implementation of the continent's anti-corruption initiatives.
