August 2006 with Senior Citizens in Alexandra Township
3 August 2006
The Presidency Spousal Office and the South African Women in Dialogue
(SAWID) will on 8 August host a massive event for about 3 000 senior citizens
from Alexandra Township to celebrate the role that the elderly played towards
the achievement of freedom in South Africa.
The event is organised in honour of women in light of the 50th Anniversary
of the Women's March to Pretoria back in 1956; it also aims to raise community
awareness regarding the plight of the elderly, to highlight ways in which young
people could assist the elderly in their communities.
As part of the weeklong community awareness on this theme youth groups from
within and outside Alexandra have volunteered to visit the elderly at home,
helping with cleaning, painting and revamping the two old age homes in
Alexandra.
With the objective of improving the conditions of the elderly, The Alexandra
Renewal Project has contributed five three-bedroom houses to Itlhokomeleng Old
Age Home, which are to be completed in the next few months.
This event is one of a variety of activities around the theme of Women's
Month that started on 1 August and serves as a build-up to the main national
event to be held at the Union Buildings on 9 August.
A variety of entertainment activities are planned for the day.
