The Presidency, through the Chancery of Orders, is calling on members of the
public, non-governmental organisations, civic-based organisations, faith-based
organisations and individuals to nominate South Africans deemed worthy
recipients of the National Orders.
The National Orders are the highest form of recognition that a country
bestows on deserving citizens. The President as the Grand Patron of the
National Orders, awards these Orders, which are inclusive and represent all
South Africans.
The National Orders gives the nation an opportunity to recall extraordinary
actions of ordinary people to build a better South Africa, while seeking to
heal the divisions of the past and establish a society based on democratic
values, social justice and fundamental human rights.
The Orders are as following:
* The Order of Mapungubwe (category Gold, Silver and Bronze)
The Order is awarded to South African citizens who have accomplished excellence
and exceptional achievement to the benefit of South Africa and beyond.
* The Order of the Baobab (category Gold, Silver and Bronze)
The Order is awarded to South African citizens who have made exceptional and
distinguished contributions in the following categories: community service,
business and the economy, science, medicine and for technological
innovation.
* The Order of Luthuli (category I Platinum II, Gold III, Silver and IV
Bronze)
The order is awarded to South African citizens in recognition of outstanding
contribution to the struggle for democracy, nation-building, building democracy
and human rights, justice and peace as well as for the resolution of
conflict.
* The Order of Ikhamanga (category Gold, Silver and Bronze)
The order is awarded to South Africans who excel in the field of arts, culture,
literature, music, journalism and sport.
* The Order of Mendi for bravery (category Gold, Silver and Bronze)
The order is awarded to South African citizens who have distinguished
themselves by displaying extraordinary acts of bravery through which their
lives were placed in great danger or who lost their lives including trying to
save the life of another person or by saving property in or outside the
Republic of South Africa.
Interested parties are urged to download nomination forms from the
Government Information website (http://www.info.gov.za), The Presidency website

or the website of the Department of Arts and Culture (http://www.dac.gov.za). The forms are also
available at Multi-Purpose Community Centres across the country.
The closing date for nomination is 8 January 2007.
