The Deputy President has met with members of the civil society in her
capacity as chairperson of the South African National AIDS Council (SANAC) to
refine preparations for World AIDS Day on 1 December 2006.
This meeting is one among many held to strengthen the national partnership
against AIDS and send a clear message that will assist our people to fight and
manage the disease better.
Success in implementing the national HIV and AIDS plans depends on
leadership at every level of society as well as mobilisation and co-operation
from all sectors, government, labour, business, health workers, scientists,
non-governmental organisations, faith-based organisations and traditional
leaders.
The meeting agreed to release the following at the World AIDS Day event in
KaNyamazane, in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga Province:
- The framework of the restructured SANAC and the National Strategic Plan
2007- 2011.
- A message communicating a shared approach by the partnership on prevention,
treatment care and support.
While the meeting acknowledged that a lot of work had been done and good
progress made, it however, accepted that in the first quarter of 2007 a lot
more effort would put into the details in relation to terms of reference,
protocols, programmes and guidelines that would promote an effective SANAC.
The meeting reiterated the agreements of the SANAC review workshop held on
31 October 2006 at Gallagher Estate (http://www.info.gov.za/speeches/2006/06103116451002.htm).
