Presidency on fight against HIV and AIDS

South Africans need to work together to fight HIV and
AIDS

6 November 2006

South Africa needs to strengthen partnerships among government, business,
the civil society in fighting the scourge of HIV and AIDS. Recent developments
in this regards are encouraging and are to be commended.

Government, therefore, wishes to clearly state that the work of the Ministry
and Department of Health has not been altered or taken over. The Department of
Health is still the key in the deliberations and implementation of all
programmes related to HIV and AIDS, which will be done with all partners in the
fight against this pandemic. The intensity of the anti-HIV and AIDS work needs
to be increased and sharpened to ensure that an ultimate loser in this battle
is the disease.

The Presidency has been encouraged by the co-operation received from all
stakeholders in the fight against HIV and AIDS. This partnership has been
moulded and driven by the Department of Health and other social cluster
departments.

The nation is, therefore, urged to support the programme to achieve unity in
purpose and action in saving more and more lives. Therefore, no member of the
South African National Aids Council (SANAC) can afford to leave other members
behind if we all are to defeat the common enemy, HIV and AIDS. South Africans
are called upon to unite in the fight against this disease.
