Parliament to launch 2006 People's Assembly

Parliament launches the 2006 People’s Assembly

23 August 2006

Parliament, in conjunction with the Provincial Legislatures,
will launch the 2006 People’s Assembly at a time and date to be confirmed.
The event will be observed under the theme All Shall Have Equal Rights. This
theme sets the tone for a reflection on and introspection on achievements and
challenges regarding all equality legislation passed since 1994. Parliament and
Provincial Legislatures will directly engage with the public across the length
and breadth of the country on issues affecting their lives.

Issues to be discussed include women’s participation in rural economy, the
impact of legislation with unlawful discrimination against people with
disabilities, children’s rights and the impact of laws aimed at addressing
gender inequalities, among others.

During the first decade of democracy, Parliament focused more on crafting
new legislation and also amending apartheid legislation. This year’s focus is
on reviewing the impact of these pieces of legislation with specific emphasis
on gender and disability. The People’s Assembly serves as a platform to review
the progress or lack of it regarding the impact of all legislation through
direct interaction with communities.
