P Vilakazi at traffic officer parade inspection

Traffic officers must be more vigilant

The North West MEC for Transport, Roads and Community Safety Phenye Vilakazi
has urged traffic officers to ensure that they vigilantly enforce traffic laws
as this will ensure that accidents on the road are decreased. Vilakazi was
speaking at a parade inspection as part of his re-introduction to the traffic
management staff of the department.

"You must always be visible and ensure that you issue out a lot of traffic
fines as this will assist to deter road accidents, unroadworthy vehicles should
be removed as they also contribute immensely to road accidents," said
Vilakazi.

He encouraged traffic officers to share resources irrespective of the region
they are based at and assured them that resources would be made available to
allow optimal performance. One hundred and fifty new officers will be employed
over a three year period whilst 150 highway patrol vehicles will be purchased
over the same period to ensure that traffic management becomes effective.

"Ill-disciplined behaviour will not be tolerated, therefore we will dismiss
corrupt officers, if you don't want to work make way for those who want to" he
emphasised. The parade was made by management and junior members of traffic
management directorate.
