P Vilakazi on suspension of driving licence testing centres

Province suspends five drivers licence testing stations in
Mafikeng

10 September 2007

North West MEC for Transport, Roads and Community Safety, Phenye Vilakazi,
has suspended five driving licence testing centres due to non-compliance with
the "minimum requirements for registration and grading of driving testing
centres". The five centres are Stilfontein and Klerksdorp in the Matlosana
Local Municipality, Coligny in the Ditsobotla Local Municipality, Potchefstroom
in the Tlokwe Local Municipality and Fochville in the Merafong Local
Municipality. The suspensions are all effective from Wednesday, 12 September
2007. "The centres were found to have a number of deficiencies that constituted
non-compliance with the necessary standards and therefore not complying with
the National Road Traffic Act that governs driving licence testing centres,"
said Vilakazi.

The deficiencies included the following:

* poor maintenance of the testing area and faded markings and signage
* lack of the necessary equipment
* lack of full-time management for the centres
* poor handling of communication with licence applicants
* poor filing systems

The centres have been suspended from issuing drivers licences and they have
been degraded to lower grades as a result.
