tribute to late Merafong councillor
11 July 2006
The MEC for Developmental Local Government and Housing, Phenye Vilakazi, has
paid tribute to the late councillor of Merafong, Mphela Dorah Modise, who
passed away after a long illness. Modise, 45, succumbed to breast cancer on
Tuesday last week, 4 July 2006.
âThe Merafong Municipality and indeed our province have lost a gallant
leader who will always be remembered by her community and the local government
sector,â said Vilakazi.
âWe are deeply saddened by the fact that she passed away just after the
incorporation of the Merafong municipality into the province, a process she
actively participated in as a leader of her community.â
Vilakazi said it would be proper for the people of North West to celebrate
Modiseâs life by continuing with the good work she had dedicated all her life
to.
âShe was a leader who loved the best for her community. It would be
inappropriate to mourn her death. All she deserves is for her life to be
celebrated by not only the Merafong Community, but also the entire province,â
said Vilakazi.
Modise was born in Khutsong near Carltonville in the North West Province.
She started her schooling at S Y Kamohela Primary School at the Southern
District and completed her matriculation at Badirile High School in 1985.
She was a member the local ward committee from 2003/04 and served as
secretary of the crisis committee for housing and also as secretary of the
African National Congressâ Bekezela branch from 2004/05. She was also the
chairperson of the African National Congress (ANC) Womenâs league in Bekezela
from 2004/05 and secretary of the ANCâs Muzi Goliath branch from 2005/06.
Modise was elected as a ward councillor in the local government elections in
March this year, a position she held until she passed away last week. At the
time of her death, she was serving on the public safety portfolio committee of
the Merafong local council.
She will be buried at Khutsong cemetery this Saturday, 15 July 2006, after a
service that will take place at the Merafong Civic Centre from 8h00. Her
memorial service will also be held at the Merafong Civic Centre today,
Thursday, 13 July 2006 at 13h00.
Modise is survived by her two sons, Tumelo (24) and Lebogang (5).
