hospital catering
20 November 2006
In a move that is the first of its kind in the country, the KwaZulu-Natal
Department of Health will tomorrow unveil a multi-million rand empowerment
project that will see hospital catering being handed over to emerging Black
Economic Empowerment (BEE) caterers in the province. The project, which is
being run with the full co-operation of all stakeholders, is sure to
revolutionise the catering industry in the province and cause major excitement
among KwaZulu-Natal emerging catering small, medium and micro-enterprises
(SMMEs), many of whom never graduate beyond catering for small functions.
Currently only a few major catering companies are preparing meals everyday
for the department's institutions, and the department would like to open this
up to SMMEs in a move that is in line with the department's goal of fighting
poverty, fighting disease and giving hope to the people of KwaZulu-Natal.
The department is currently engaged in a programme that will ensure that
there is proper transfer of skills and mentoring to the successful emerging
contractors. This is aimed at ensuring the success of this project and
efficient service delivery.
The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Health, Peggy Nkonyeni, will unveil this
groundbreaking programme in a briefing session and dinner planned as
follows:
Date: Tuesday, 21 November 2006
Venue: Seminar Suite 1, 3rd Floor Main Building, Inkosi Albert Luthuli
Central
Hospital, Cato Manor, Durban
Time: 18h30
Journalists are invited to attend the briefing session and to report on the
programme. Transport to and from Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital is
