Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka to launch the Big
Brothers Big Sisters Programme on 27 February 2006

24 February 2006

Deputy President and Patron of the Moral Regeneration Movement, Ms Phumzile
Mlambo-Ngcuka, will on Monday, 27 February, launch Umsobomvu Youth Fund’s Big
Brothers Big Sisters Programme (BBBSP) in Mamelodi, Pretoria.

The Big Brother Big Sister Programme is a one to one mentoring initiative
that encourages the establishment of caring relationships between adults and
youth. The programme is a product of the Big Brothers Big Sisters International
which has been in existence for 104 years, and implemented in more than 36
countries worldwide.

The BBBSP provides children with the support and guidance of a trained adult
mentor who acts as a role model, friend and a mentor. The objective is to
encourage positive behaviour patterns and facilitate constructive choices by
children. Evaluations of this programme show that this kind of support reduces
the chances of children turning into destructive behaviour whilst increasing
their chances of growing into responsible adults.

In order to extend the benefits of this programme to as many young people as
possible, the National Youth Service Unit supported by Umsobomvu Youth Fund and
the office of Deputy President will be supporting BBBSA with funding and the
recruitment of people to add to the pool of mentors already existing.

Further details of the event are:
Time: 10am
Venue: Mamelodi West Community Hall Section T, Pretoria East
