South African Women in Dialogue

Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka will tomorrow on Thursday, 13
December 2007, address the Young South African Women in Dialogue at the
Assemblies of God Conference Centre, in Henley-on-Klip, Meyerton.
This year's dialogue takes place under the theme "Personal Development and
Economic Empowerment" jointly with South African Women in Dialogue (SAWID). The
main focus is to deal with challenge of poverty eradication through the
economic empowerment of young women across their developmental stages as a top
priority.
The conference brings together young South African women, from various
communities and backgrounds, between the ages of 18 and 35 and the objectives
are to:
* provide a safe space for young women to dialogue, network and
share ideas on a broad range of issues
* build the capacity of young women to deal with personal and
economic challenges
* promote social and economic entrepreneurship amongst young women
and mainstream the economic participation of young women
* empower women to mobilise for the implementation of economic and
social policies designed to redress historical inequalities
* identify best practices and endorse programme propositions for local-level
implementation of actions recommended by the dialogue
* draw strategic lessons from international and continental instruments like
Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women
(CEDAW), Young Minds Drama Group (YMDG), African Union (AU), New Partnership
for Africa's Development (Nepad) etc. for implementation at local level
* forge partnerships for post-conference development and implementation.
The first Young South African Women in Dialogue forum, which was convened in
December 2004 at the Saldanha Naval College and was attended by more than nine
hundred young women aged between 16 and 35 years of age. They identified four
key pillars as central to young women's empowerment:
* personal development
* economic development
* bridging the gap
* democratic rights and responsibilities.
