review workshop
2 May 2007
Members of the media are invited to the opening ceremony of the arts and
culture policy review workshop. The Minister of Arts and Culture, Dr Z Pallo
Jordan will officially open the workshop. The Department of Arts and Culture
(DAC) plays an important role in the arts and culture sector by developing
policy objectives and priorities. While taking a leading role, the DAC should
continuously ensure an assessment of the role of provincial and local
government as well as public entities as delivery channels. This also includes
resources allocation and management, international development, funding and the
contribution of the sector to the economy.
In the light of new challenges, changing and expanding government programmes
and the general environment there is a need to engage in periodic review of
policy, the institutional arrangements and challenges with regards to capacity
and capability to deliver on the objectives set out in the White Paper on arts,
culture and heritage. The review process will assist the various spheres of
government departments of arts and culture and public entities to assess
relevance and responsiveness to the arts and culture sector and align policy to
current priorities. Delegates from all the nine provinces and the arts and
culture sector will participate at the workshop.
