Members of media are invited to a launch of the programme of the
anniversaries to be celebrated during the year 2006. The Cabinet meeting of 7
December 2005 noted that 2006 would coincide with major anniversaries in the
history of the struggle for freedom and democracy in South Africa.
International Womenâs Day, 8 March 2006, saw the successful launch in Cape Town
of the programme of activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Womenâs
Anti-Pass March to the Union Buildings.
The other anniversaries include the 20th anniversary of the Samara Machel
plane crash, the centenary of the Anti-Poll Tax Uprising (Bhambatha rebellion),
the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution, the 30th anniversary
of the Soweto Uprising, the 60th anniversary of the Mine workers Strike of
1946, the centenary of Satyagraha and the 50th anniversary of the Treason
Trial. An Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) led by the Minister of Arts and
Culture, Dr Z Pallo Jordan will brief members of media on the government
programme of activities to celebrate these anniversaries.
