Northern Cape EXCO to hold annual Planning Lekgotla, 25 – 26 Apr

Northern Cape Provincial Government Executive Council Lekgotla
statement

25 April 2006

The Executive Council (EXCO) of the Northern Cape Province (Provincial
Cabinet) held its annual Planning Lekgotla from 25 to 26 April 2006 to reflect
on government performance and to identify delivery priorities to be engaged
in.

This crucial meeting, to be held in Kimberley, will be attended by the
Premier, Members of the Executive Council, Mayors, senior officials in the
provincial government and municipal managers.

The two-day meeting will seek to ensure synergy of government delivery
programmes across departments and spheres. Accordingly, the EXCO Lekgotla's
deliberations and focus areas are largely guided by national policy imperatives
and directives. One of the key priorities identified in this regard is the need
to improve co-operative governance across all three spheres.

The meeting will reconfirm that the critical challenges facing government
and its social partners remain poverty reduction and job creation. To this end,
the Lekgotla is expected to resolve that its intervention strategies to address
these twin challenges would be within the framework of the Provincial Growth
and Development Strategy as well as the Accelerated and Shared Growth
Initiative for South Africa (AsgiSA).

The Lekgotla will note the need to ensure effective alignment between the
Provincial Growth and Development Strategy and Integrated Development
Programmes of municipalities and to pay focused attention to this area. Project
Consolidate will be another area which the meeting will deliberate on as a way
of ensuring that municipalities receive the support needed for them to delivery
a quality service to the people.

The Lekgotla is also expected make a commitment that the Northern Cape would
make a meaningful input and contribution towards the fulfilment of AsgiSA
objectives and that for economic growth to make a positive impact on society as
a whole, its benefits needed to be shared by all. It was also important for
poor people to share in the growth that the country experiences and that the
province needed to pay focused attention to skills development if AsgiSA was to
become a reality.
