Northern Cape to commemorate Africa Public Service Day, 23 Jun

Africa Public Service Week

19 June 2006

Theme: ‘Building an ethical service for improved service delivery in
Africa’.

As part of the Africa Public Service Week i.e. 19 - 23 June 2006, Premier
Dipuo Peters paid a surprise visit to two government departments to witness how
members of the public receive their services.

The departments visited are the Department of Home Affairs and the Labour
Department.

In both departments Premier Peters was pleased to observe that there was no
delay no long queues and a complaint box was visible placed for all.

Premier interacted with members of the public and the staff and believes
that there is room for improvement.

Amongst other hiccups:

* Some staff members did not have their badges on and did not introduce
themselves when interacting with the public,

* There is no vigorous effort by the department of labour to address the
issues of training for farm workers although there are certain programmes in
place,

* The delay in processing ID applications. Premier feels that the three
months waiting period is too long this can be shortened.

Background:

The Africa Public Service Day 2006 will be celebrated in the continent on 23
June 2006. While some countries will be conducting week long celebrations, the
23 June 2006 will be observed as the Africa Public Service Day.

The Africa Public Service Day is linked to the United Nations Public Service
day which was designated by the General assembly to celebrate the value and
virtue to service to the community by public servants all over the world.

Premier Dipuo Peters is calling on all public servants in the Northern Cape
to attend celebrations and participate in the signing of the Public Service
Pledge to recommit themselves in serving the community meticulously with
diligence and compassion, and further reconstruct the public sector in line
with Africa’s unique challenges.
