The Premier of the North West, Edna Molewa says the commemoration of June 16
uprising will serve as an inspiration to current and future generations as it
continuously reminds them of the role played by them in the liberation struggle
which contributed immensely to the current democratic State.

"Thirty Years after the historic activism of the Class 1976, what should be
today's youth Agenda, for it to be relevant its agenda must not be at discord
with the National Agenda. If it is to connect with the ordinary masses, it must
resist the temptation of unproductive generalisation, abstraction or theory and
tackle issues relating to real experiences on the ground,” said Premier
Molewa

The North West Provincial Government June 16 commemorations will be
celebrated in Merafong, Kokosi at the Dr Popo Molefe Soccer Stadium.

The programme will commence with a moment of silence throughout the country
at 09:00, which is the approximate time on which the first victim of June 16,
1976, Hector Zolile Peterson, was shot by the security forces of the time.

A march will commence from the Morris Isaacson High school and proceed to
the Hector Peterson memorial for a wreath-laying ceremony.

According to the Chairperson of the North West Youth Commission, Kabelo
Mataboge, President Thabo Mbeki will address the main rally at Soccer City
Stadium (FNB) immediately after the wreath-laying ceremony. Premier Edna Molewa
will address the Provincial Youth Rally in Merafong Fochville, Kokosi Township,
Dr Popo Molefe Soccer Stadium.

"We expect the youth around the province to attend the event in big numbers.
The Provincial Youth Commission, North West Provincial Government, Youth
Formations and Merafong Local Municipality have mobilised the youth to ensure
maximum participation of South Africans, particularly youth in the programme of
the day,” he said.

Mataboge says the youth will be entertained by the likes of Tuks Senganga,
Merafe, Arthur Mafokate and local DJ's in a music festival immediately after
the formal programme. "The festivities and celebrations shall however have to
be short-lived before sunset to allow young people to return home safely before
it becomes dark and unruly,” said Mataboge.
