Traffic officer knocked down

23 October 2007

A North West Provincial traffic officer is recovering at his home after he
was knocked down by a car whilst trying to control traffic in an accident
scene. Two traffic officers Senior Provincial Inspector Aaron Raditlhalo and
Provincial Inspector Philemon Letsholo were yesterday called to attend an
accident in which a Datsun 1400 LDV had overturned following a tyre burst on
the N4 road near Swartruggens.

The bakkie was obstructing traffic and as a result Raditlhalo tried to
address the problem. Provincial Inspector Modisane alleged that while
Raditlhalo was controlling traffic, a Mercedes Benz approached the accident
scene and Raditlhalo alerted the driver to reduce speed. He applied the brakes
and the Toyota Avanza that was following the Mercedes Benz tried to avoid
crushing into the vehicle in front by swerving to the right, facing oncoming
traffic and knocking Raditlhalo down.

He was rushed to a nearby Zeerust hospital, suffering head injuries, mouth
cuts and wounds on his right leg. He was later discharged from hospital.
