North West Traffic has confiscated nine government vehicles from drivers who
did not have the necessary authorisation in an operation that began last night
and ended this morning. The operation targeted officials who drove government
vehicles without authorisation and will continue as the provincial government
tries to curb misuse of government vehicles.
North West MEC for Transport, Roads and Community Safety, Phenye Vilakazi,
said he expected heads of affected departments to take disciplinary action
against the culprits before the vehicles could be released. "The vehicles will
not be released to the concerned departments until they give an undertaking
that action will be taken against the drivers from whom the vehicles were
impounded", said Vilakazi.
The vehicles impounded belong to the following departments:
* Department of Justice (2)
* Department of Agriculture (1)
* Department of Local Government and Housing (1)
* Department of Social Services (1)
* Department of Health (1)
* Department of the Premier (1)
* North West Legislature (1)
* Department of Finance (1).
Letters will be sent the affected departments for their undertaking to
discipline the affected officials.
Meanwhile a KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture Toyota Corolla, which
was impounded on the 4th of August 2007 during the Telkom Soccer Charity
tournament in Mafikeng, is still being held by traffic authorities. It appears
the driver had travelled all the way from the province to attend a soccer
extravaganza when he was caught.
