Roads and Community Safety Head of Department, Nic van Staden, says law
enforcement against illegal taxis will be stepped up because the success of the
taxi recapitalisation process is dependent on a regulated taxi industry.
Van Staden was briefing the North West Legislature's Portfolio Committee on
Transport, Roads and Community Safety on the department's Annual Report in
Mafikeng today.
He said the department needed to act against illegal taxi operators. "A
vigorous enforcement campaign against illegal taxi operations is being planned.
As we move towards 2010, we need to clamp down on illegal taxis," said van
Staden.
Addressing the perception that traffic officers are only interested in
enforcing speed limits, van Staden told the committee that driver conduct is
the main cause of road fatalities.
"So it is important for traffic authorities to enforce speed limits amongst
other things," concluded Van Staden.
A Portfolio Committee member, Hermanus Groenewald, who is also a member of
Democratic Alliance, thanked the department for organising two very good
Mafikeng International Air Shows over the past two years.
