29 August 2007
August month has been put aside on the calendar as Women's Month; as such
the Department of Social Development in the North West will commemorate this
month and its symbolism.
This follows the 2006 department's women's seminar, which was spearheaded by
the Departmental Gender Focal Point that focused on 'leadership capacity
development and the empowerment of departmental women.' The success of this
event in 2006 created dialogue around the importance of women in the workplace;
therefore the department undertook to further this dialogue by hosting a
similar campaign in 2007 that will include men within the department in an
effort to align and realign its programmes to the mandate of gender
mainstreaming.
This year's event will be attended by 500 employees where 200 will be men
and 300 females of the department from provincial and district offices. The
programme for this year will feature from the following institutions:
* Public Service Commission
* Apprentice SA winner for 2005
* movers and shakers
* legal sector.
Members of the media are thus invited to join the department in recognising
the significance of August month and are further requested to send one
representative.
