North West Social Development on Adult Basic Education and Training
(ABET) programme launch

ABET launch by North West Social Development

24 August 2007

The Department of Social Development is on the course of taking the lead in
ensuring educational development among its employees. The Department launched
its Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) Programme earlier this week in
Rustenburg for its low level employees with the intention to ensure that they
are able to read, write, count and communicate properly.

Adult Basic Education and Training is the conceptual foundation towards
lifelong learning and skills development. Currently over 120 departmental
employees have shown keenness in enrolling for the programme. Registered
employees are employed as cleaners, drivers, security guards and grounds
men.

"The gesture is part of the poverty alleviation strategy where literacy and
skills development were further identified as a challenge to our employees. We
want then to grow in and ensure that they are able to can read, write and count
on their own," said the MEC for Social Development during the launch of the
programme.

The programme will further assist such employees on issues such as career
development, achievement of economic growth, financial planning and personal
development growth of the learners. The launch was an attempt to dispute the
public perceptions that reduces the ABET programme to merely being a programme
for the illiterate or 'inferior skills.' ABET constitutes the holistic
development of an individual to fulfil their social, economic and political
rights in the society.
