opportunities for further empowerment
13 February 2007
The expansion of the R25 million Integrated Modimola Expanded Public Works
Programme (EPWP) Project has afforded opportunities for development and further
empowerment for emerging contractors.
Five of the sixteen graduate learner contractors are currently engaged in
the construction of a 5 kilometre new gravel road between Modimola village and
Masutlhe, one village using labour intensive methods.
The R4,1 million project includes the installation of road signs,
construction of drainage structures, construction of minor culverts and
stormwater drainage works. It would benefit public transport such as taxis,
busses and provide access to services as it links the villages to Masutlhe
Clinic and Masutlhe Primary School.
Six other learner contractors are involved in the first phase of the R4
million Lotlamoreng Dam Development Initiative and construction of additional
farm infrastructure for the Modimola Farming Enterprise while five are engaged
in the Road Construction Project in Modimong and the Construction of Community
Halls in Modimong and Cokonyane Villages in Taung.
Speaking on behalf of the emerging contractors, Alfred Ramotsongwa said, "We
are excited to be part of the Public Private Partnership that improves the
lives of our communities." Meanwhile, the Modimola EPWP Project, which scooped
the Best Managed Project in 2005 North West Premier's Public Sector Excellence
Awards, is nominated for the Public Works Minister's EPWP Recognition Awards
and Impumelelo Innovation Awards to be held on Thursday, 15 February 2007 in
Johannesburg and Saturday, 17 February 2007 in Cape Town, respectively.
