16 May 2006

North West Department of Public Works is to hold a departmental workplace
candlelight memorial in memory of those who died of AIDS related illnesses at
its provincial head Office in Mmabatho on Friday, 19 May 2006.

The function is a build-up event towards the provincial candlelight memorial
to be held on 25 May 2006.The objectives of the Candlelight Memorial Day is
to:

* honour the memory of those lost to AIDS
* to show support for those living with HIV and AIDS
* to raise worker awareness and decrease stigma related to HIV and AIDS
* to mobilise worker involvement in the fight against HIV and AIDS.

The Memorial Day is meant as a catalyst for workers to talk about HIV and
AIDS in the workplace and is a unique event that will promote discussion,
education, awareness and action against the HIV and AIDS pandemic.

In support of the event the MEC for Public Works, Mr Howard Yawa, says "Open
dialogue and workplace support for those living with HIV and AIDS would
contribute towards de-stigmatising HIV and AIDS. Promoting awareness and
imparting necessary knowledge about HIV and AIDS is critical as the workplace
is not immune to the pandemic."
