empowers locals

The First Phase of the 19,1 kilometre Road Upgrading and surfacing Project
between Khibicwane, Mamashokwane and Moseja villages in Taung has created much
needed job opportunities in the impoverished communities and injected life into
the rural economy.
The 6,8 kilometres labour intensive road upgrading and surfacing project
currently under construction between Khibicwane and Cokonyane village has thus
far created two hundred and forty jobs for unemployed locals, empowered twelve
local tractor owners and injected life into the local economy.
Local tractor owners earn an average of ten thousand rands per month each
from the R11,5 million project and their involvement in the project is expected
to continue into the second phase which is expected to commence in May.
After visiting the projects recently, North West MEC for Public Works said,
"Our integrated approach in the implementation of the Expanded Public Works
Programme has given hope for sustainable livelihoods to previously marginalised
rural communities."
The Modimong EPWP Project is part of the Taung Development Programme which
is one of the North West's Five Special High Impact Programmes that are to
contribute towards the Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative for South
Africa(AsgiSA).
