North West Public Works on BEE awarded contracts

NW Public Works registers 260% increase in Black Economic
Empowerment (BEE)

18 May 2006

Presenting his Department's budget vote speech in the North West Provincial
legislature on Tuesday, Public Works MEC, Honourable Howard Yawa reported that
of the R500,780 million bids awarded by his Department in the last financial
year, 92% of the contracts valued at R460,736 million were awarded to
historically disadvantaged individuals.

This constitutes 260% increase in BEE. Within the framework of the
Preferential Procurement Policy Framework Act and Broad-based Black Economic
Empowerment Policy, thirty-four women contractors were also awarded contracts
to the value of R95,149 million.

MEC Yawa decried the slow registration of contractors with the Construction
Industry Development Board and called upon contractors to register as it is in
their interest to register.
