North West Provincial Legislature on hosting of Youth Parliament

North West Provincial Legislature hosts most successful Youth
Parliament

15 June 2006

On 15 June 2006 the youth of the North West Province converged on the North
West Provincial Legislature in their hundreds to participate in this year’s
Youth Parliament. The theme of this year’s 30 year celebratory Youth Parliament
was “All shall have equal rights”.

The usually sombre Provincial Legislature chamber was transformed by the
bright yellows and blues worn by the youth. Close to a thousand brightly clad
young people attended the event with a main focus on three thematic areas
namely Economic Participation, Health and Education. Presentations and report
back were given by youth from various sectors such as unorganised youth, youth
with disabilities, youth from minority groups, grade 11 and 12 learners and
first and second year tertiary students.

The youth who gave presentations were selected from a pool of youth who took
part in workshops the day before to debate the issues. The quality of
discussions amongst these young people was of an unbelievable quality and
commission report backs and recommendations were indicative of this.

On 21 June the Legislature once again held workshops with youth. The aim of
this workshop was to consolidate what had been discussed in the commissions and
reported back, select the young people who would go to the National Youth
Parliament in Cape Town to represent the province and engage with other youth
from around the country and share experiences. The youth selected to attend
this extraordinary National Youth Parliament are Malebogo Gaeepe, Mpho Kgwadi,
Vincent Bokkies, Thapelo Maine, Godfrey Bobe, Elsie Ranakodi, Zanele Sokhupa,
Ellen Selepe, Bonolo Mothobi, Rakgale Ngoako, Mothusi Tsineng, Collen Maine,
Phemelo Malebelela, Hope Van Wyk, Motsosiemang Gadinabokao, Leandi Erasmus,
Thapelo Motlogi, Lawrence Modimokwane and Sydney Mogale.

The North West Provincial Legislature has proudly met all the criteria set
by Parliament for participation of all representative groups in the province.
The delegation will be accompanied by four officials who were instrumental in
the task team and will depart on 26 June for Cape Town and returns on 30
June.

“We are thrilled, excited and proud that our youth will be going to Cape
Town to represent the province. I know that they can only do us proud!” said
Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature, Thandi Modise.
