culminate in provincial workshop in Bojanala
18 July 2006
On 21 July 2006 at Rustenburg Kloof in Rustenburg (Bojanala District), the
North West Provincial Legislature will be holding the Peopleâs Assembly
Provincial Workshop where the final 30 participants will be selected to
represent the North West Province in a live television broadcast on 15
September 2006.
The theme of the People's Assembly 2006 is âAll shall have equal rightsâ.
The main event of the People's Assembly 2006 is on 15 September 2006. The
purpose of this year's People's Assembly is to celebrate the 10th anniversary
of our Constitution. The main focus of this year's event is to analyse the
achievements and/or challenges of equality between the two defined sectors of
gender and, people with disabilities.
All citizens of South Africa regardless of race, gender, creed, political
opinion, religion, sexual persuasion, or health are encouraged to attend and
participate in the People's Assembly, because democracy belongs to all. The
main question being asked in the workshops is, "To what extent has legislation
impacted on or changed the lives of the ordinary citizen?," with a focus on
women's participation in the rural economy, the impact of legislation dealing
with unlawful discrimination against people with disabilities, and last, but
not least, the rights of the child with reference to child labour focussing on
children on farms.
Other objectives include taking stock of Parliament's (and the legislatures)
constitutional role of passing laws that seek to address and redress issues of
inequalities and, most important, to provide a vehicle for people's voices to
be heard on issues affecting them.
The aims of the workshops, which are taking place across the province, are
to mobilise people to ensure that they take part in their democracy. Also
important is the consultative and feedback process required for an event of
this magnitude and nature. Finally the one-day seminars aim to select 15 people
per district (region) with a final provincial workshop taking place to select
the final 30 who will represent the country and the province at this year's
people Assembly 2006 in Rustenburg.
