North West Provincial Legislature embarks on province-wide
People's Assembly workshops

27 August 2007

In keeping with its spirit of participatory democracy the North West
Provincial Legislature will once again be holding workshops across the
province, this time for the 4th Annual People's Assembly. People's Assembly
2007 will be tackling wide ranging issues such as 'The eradication of poverty
and hunger, combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases and ensuring
environmental sustainability.'

The theme of this year's People's Assembly is 'Masijule Ngengxoxo Mzansi'
which means 'Let's deepen the debate South Africa.'

The objectives of the People's Assembly are, amongst others, to build a
participation model that will reach the poor and unorganised, to strengthen
public participation, to educate people, especially about parliamentary
processes, to ensure feasibility of representation by parliamentarians, to
facilitate and encourage accountability by government, to break communication
barriers between ordinary people and their representatives and to work towards
cohesive and strengthened nation-building.

People's Assembly 2007 will take place in all nine provinces hosted by the
various legislatures with the parliamentary event taking place in Mbizana in
the Eastern Cape from 17 to 19 September 2007. In the North West province
People's Assembly 2007 will take place on 19 September 2007 in Mafikeng at the
University of the North West Great Hall.

As a build up to this major national event, the North West Provincial
Legislature is embarking on workshops to educate and sensitise our people about
the upcoming event and the issues to be discussed.

The workshops will take place from 28 August in Moedvel in Kgetleng Rivier
Municipality in the Bojanala District, 29 August at the Wedela Community Hall
in Merafong Municipality in the Southern District, 30 August at Bloemhof Town
Hall in Lekwa-Teemane Municipality in the Bophirima District and on 31 August
at the Tswaing Municipal hall in Tswaing Municipality in the Modiri Molema
