counter Department of Housing allegations

On 17 November 2006, the North West Provincial Legislature, led by the
Speaker of the House, Honourable Thandi Modise will be holding a press
conference at a venue to be confirmed in Johannesburg to refute the numerous
allegations made the North West Province Department of Developmental Local
Government and Housing and by a specific official, its spokesperson, Mandla
Mathebula.
"Enough is enough," said the visibly infuriated Speaker. "This Department
and in particular this official, has gotten into the habit of insulting this
Legislature with no regard for the fact that he is just that, an official and
not a politician."
"We are calling this press conference to clear up the numerous fabrications
he has spread about this Legislature. He forgets that the "incorrect" and
"inaccurate" reports he says are issued by our Communications Department were
tabled in the House and unanimously adopted by all members of the provincial
legislature, including his very own political principal, MEC Vilakazi,"
continued Modise
"By saying that our Communications Department is in the habit of issuing
inaccurate statements which mislead the media, he is in fact calling us, his
political principals, liars. We have no idea how the department works with
regard to statements issued to the media but in the Legislature, every piece of
information that is disseminated is in fact approved by the relevant
chairperson or indeed by me. So what he is saying is that we knowingly set out
to lie to the media and the public at large," reiterated the Speaker.
"Discretion has been the better part of valour for too long. We have tried
to deal with issue with both his political principal and his administrative
head but to no avail. That being the case, the Legislature wishes to clear up
all the factual inaccuracies contained in the numerous media statements
released by the department by having this press conference," concluded the
Honourable Modise.
