Grade 10 Maths and Science learners from Arefadimeheng Secondary School
today braved the freezing weather for a project site visit at the Matlosana
Secure Care Centre Project Construction Site in Jouberton Township outside
Matlosana.
The project site visit hosted by the North West Department of Public Works
and National Entrepreneurial Partnership Consulting Engineers included
presentations by construction professionals and a tour of the Project
Construction Site.
The visit is part of the provincial programme in support of National
Construction Week. The objective of the campaign is to promote the profile and
image of the construction sector among Grade 10 Maths and Science learners in
order to attract them to the sector.
Despite the freezing weather, presentations by the Departmentâs Civil and
Structural Engineers, Architects and HO Quantity Surveyors gripped the
attention of the learners. The presentations focused on the role of different
built environment professionals in the construction process, opportunities and
benefits for new entrants in the sector.
In his remarks, Public Works Head of Department Mr Obakeng Mongale
highlighted the critical skills shortage in the construction sector and urged
the learners to consider the construction professions as career options.
After presentations, learners were taken through a tour of the
administration block, youth court, six tradesâ workshops for rehabilitation, a
computer room, three recreational areas, and living quarters for 60 youths.
On completion, the R20,9 million facilities for youth in conflict with the
law will cater for 40 males and 20 females and alleviate juvenile overcrowding
in prisons.
To wrap up the Provincial Programme for National Construction Week, the
department will on Thursday, 3 August 2006 host learners from Pule Leeuw
Secondary School on a Project Visit to the Vryburg Hospital Revitalisation
Project.
