North West to host Annual Provincial Vuna Awards, 8 Nov

Recognition of best performing municipalities

5 November 2007

The best performing municipality will be rewarded at the Annual North West
Provincial Vuna Awards scheduled for Thursday, 8 November 2007 at Royal
Bafokeng Conference Centre at 18h00.

The 'Vuna' (Nguni word for reaping) award was introduced in 2003 as an
initiative by the Department of Provincial and Local Government (DPLG),
Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA), the National Productivity Institute
(NPI) and the South African Local Government Association (Salga) to reward
municipalities for delivering excellent services to their communities.

Municipalities will be judged on the following:

* municipal transformation and organisational development
* basic service delivery
* local economic development
* municipal financial viability and management
* good governance and public participation.

There are only two types of municipalities in the province, i.e. Category B
(local municipalities) and Category C for district municipalities. The overall
winner for each category, will each receive a cheque of R750 000 and a floating
trophy. The North West MEC for Developmental Local Government and Housing,
Howard Yawa, will confer the awards to municipalities, on behalf of Premier
Edna Molewa. The winning municipality (both Category B and C) will
automatically qualify for the national nomination scheduled for 5 December
2007.
