North West honours Minister Sigcau

12 May 2006

The North West Province today celebrated the life and contribution of the
late Minister Stella Sigcau towards rural development and transformation of the
construction and properties sectors at a memorial service held in her honour at
the Mmabatho Convention Centre in the North West provincial capital of
Mafikeng.

Tributes and messages of condolences from National and Provincial government
departments described the late Minister as a visionary leader, a change agent,
a revolutionary stalwart, a mother to the nation, a champion of humanity,
dignity, freedom, and stubborn resistance against overwhelming odds. She was
also remembered as a true friend of the working class, a development activist
committed to the struggle for liberation and emancipation of all the
people.

Premier Molewa's message read by the newly appointed Head of Department for
the Provincial Department of Public Works, Mr Obakeng Mongale, saluted Minster
Sigcau as a soldier and a combatant for liberation and social
transformation.

MEC for Public Works Howard Yawa described her as selfless community worker,
a courageous and remarkable servant of the people who fought illness with
bravery to serve rural communities, the poor and the marginalised.

Messages of condolence were also read from the Portfolio Committee on Public
Works in the North West Provincial legislature, the Executive Mayors of the
Central District Municipality and the Mafikeng Local Municipality.

Meanwhile, a farewell motorcade and float in honour of the late Minister
Stella Sigcau will travel through the street of Mafikeng, Montshiwa and
Mmabatho on Tuesday, 16 May 2006, as her funeral coincides with the Public
Works Budget Speech to be tabled by MEC Yawa in the Provincial legislature.

The memorial service organised jointly by the Mmabatho Regional Office of
the National Department of Public Works and the North West Department of Public
Works was attended by hundreds of public servants from provincial and national
departments and members of the public.
