North West Health on Mental Health Month

North West commemorates Mental Health Month

19 October 2006

Mental Health Month is an annual observance designed to increase awareness
about mental health and illness as related to it. This year's theme, "Building
Awareness - Reducing the Risk: Mental Illness and Suicide," spotlights the mind
and body connection. It draws upon a growing body of evidence that illustrates
the important link between physical and mental health.

The event will concentrate on "suicide" as it is a major problem in our
society, especially among the youth. It is estimated that about 873 000 people
commit suicide every year, which represent 1,4% of the global burden of
disease. Suicide among the youth is of significant concern in our society as it
is the third leading cause of death in the age group of 15 to 35 years.

"More than 90% of all cases of suicide are associated with mental disorders
such as depression, schizophrenia, alcoholism and drugs. Our province is also
affected as it had 243 attempted suicides just in one quarter, which is from
October to December 2005. The statistics of those who committed suicide are
with the South African Police Services (SAPS) as cases are directly handled by
the police and there is a need for the collaboration between the departments,"
explained MEC Rasmeni.

"Mental health and physical health go hand in hand. Caring for your mind, as
well as your body, is good for your overall health and is the key to your
success at home, at work and at school. Mental health problems, including
depression and anxiety disorders, are as treatable as many physical illnesses,"
concluded MEC Nomonde Rasmeni.

Members of the media are invited to capture this event.
