Co-operative Car Project
6 September 2006
The Department of Economic Development in conjunction with the Mafikeng
Local Municipality will launch a Youth Co-operative Car Project in Mafikeng.
The MEC for Economic Development and Tourism, Darkey Africa, will on that day
be handing over the project to the Executive Mayor of Mafikeng Local
Municipality, Councillor Mosa Sejosengoe. The launch will be held as
follows:
Date: Wednesday, 13 September 2006
Venue: Unit 2 Mmabatho (Next to Caltex filling station)
Time: 09h00
The objective of the launch is to convert the existing informal car wash
projects into well-organised businesses which will also take heed of the call
of conserving the scarce natural resources such as water.
The establishment of this project is also aimed at creating a platform for
aspiring/prospective young entrepreneurs to acquire business skills and
experience under the guidance of qualified mentors, trainers and
consultants.
The land, building and equipment will be under the ownership of the Mafikeng
Local Municipality which will be responsible for rates, taxes and proper
maintenance of the building and the equipment. Other key role players in the
initiative include the Umsobomvu Youth Fund (UYF), Small Enterprise Development
Agency (SEDA) and Telkom.
On the same day of the car wash project launch, the Tsoga Lo Itirele fund
will also be launched at the same event. The fund is established following a
memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the Department of Economic
Development and Tourism and ABSA bank on the funding of Small, Medium and Micro
Enterprises (SMMEs) in the province as part of the broader strategy of
nurturing and supporting the SMMEs as the bedrock of the second economy.
Later on that day, dignitaries will proceed to a sod turning ceremony to
mark the roll-out of infrastructure development at the Mafikeng Industrial
Development Zone (MIDZ) designated area around the Mafikeng International
Airport.
