supports flood relief in Taung
5 April 2006
The Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Environment (DACE) in
collaboration with the national Department of Agriculture (DoA) established a
task team that will support the Taung Municipality to assist communities
affected by floods by rendering agricultural support for flood relief.
The department is part of the disaster management team formed by the Taung
municipality as well as the Joint Operations Committee (JOC).
An initial amount of R688 000 has been set aside for livestock and public
health support in the flood stricken villages; this includes vaccination
treatment and carcass disposal. Already 300 000 doses of anthrax vaccine has
been received; and a further 20 000 doses of lumpy skin disease and three day
stiff sickness are expected.
The disposal of carcasses has already commenced on Monday 3 April 2006, and
will run parallel with animal health vaccination as of today 5 April 2006.
Attempts will continue to establish ownership of carcasses first before
disposal.
An impact assessment will be conducted on livestock, veldt, crop and land
degradation to also identify the nature and the extent of the impact and
affected areas. Assistance will be requested from the DoA once the impact
assessment is completed to determine the level of support in agriculture for
natural resource management.
This is an age of hope for a better life for all to live in a healthy
environment. An awareness programme will be launched to inform communities
about the dangers of pollution and the risks to their health.
