Vryburg: The North West Department of Agriculture, Conservation and
Environment will this week, 5 to 9 June, join the world in promoting the Waste
Management campaign as it commemorates Environment Week. The week has been
commemorated annually with the vision of addressing lack of proper
implementation of waste management guidelines and the general cleanliness of
our environment.
With the National theme "An Age of Hope in protecting our Environment," the
department hopes to empower and capacitate communities to enable them to
protect their environment from pollution and waste that can be health
hazardous.
To ensure the communities' positive contribution towards the department's
vision and intended objectives, education and cleaning campaigns will be rolled
out at all levels of communities throughout the province. A number of
activities arranged, are aimed at ensuring that the campaigns provides the
desired effect and yields maximum impact. These activities include school
environmental talks, wards cleaning up events, cleanest ward competition and
community projects.
The North West provincial commemoration will be at Vryburg, Huhudi sports
ground on Thursday, 8 June. The formal programme will be preceded by the "Keep
Naledi shining" cleaning campaign, during which Naledi district and the local
municipality's political leaders (Mayors and councillors) will roll up their
sleeves and join the communities in cleaning the town and surrounding areas.
The main objectives of the cleaning session are to intensify the "Keep Naledi
Shining" project and to encourage communities' compliance with the municipal
by-laws and legislation on waste management.
"The department is aware of the lack of knowledge on pollution and waste
management matters that exists in the communities, and we believe that working
closely with our stakeholders will give us good results. It is through this
partnership that communities' mindsets can be changed to a point where they
will be able to value and protect their environment," said MEC for Agriculture,
Conservation and Environment in the North West, Mandlenkosi Mayisela.
The "Keep Naledi shining campaign" will start at 08h00 at Vryburg Central,
Coleridge and Huhudi location, and the formal session will start at 10h00.
Members of the media are invited to this Environment week commemoration
event.
