Rustenburg: The North West Department of Agriculture, Conservation and
Environment will on Friday, 12 October 2007 celebrate World Food Day in
partnership with the departments of Health, Education, Social Development,
Economic Development and Tourism and the Bojanala Platinum District
Municipality.
This day is observed world wide annually with the aim of ensuring that food
becomes a human right for all. It is also meant to acknowledge food security
programmes that are geared towards eradicating poverty and creating jobs. The
choice of 'The Right to Food' as the theme for 2007 World Food Day demonstrates
the orientation towards human rights in eradicating hunger and poverty. This
theme commits all countries to ensure that all citizens have access to adequate
and nutritious food acceptable within any given culture.
The South African government has committed to work with the Food and
Agriculture Organisation (FAO) to ensure that access to adequate food is
recognised as both an individual right and a collective responsibility. The
North West Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Environment has over the
past years committed itself to promoting food security and projects'
initiatives such as Letsema la Mantshatlala are examples of this efforts to
make adequate food accessible to all.
Various activities have been planned for World Food Day 2007. These aim to
raise awareness and encourage people to mobilise for food security and to take
action against hunger. These activities comprise sites visits to projects,
inspection of hawkersâ stalls and exhibitions. A number of identified
households, a primary school and a hospice around the Rustenburg area will also
be given food parcels on the day. Agricultural starter packs to assist needy
families to start back yard gardens will be handed out to ensure sustainability
beyond the days' celebrations. This year's World Food Day activities will mark
the 27th anniversary of the initiation of this day by the Food and Agriculture
Organisation of the United Nations.
