Public Works accelerates school renovation programme

6 June 2006

As a result of forward planning processes that the Department of Public
Works had embarked upon, work has already started in earnest for renovation of
29 schools across the province.

14 of the schools being renovated are in the Bojanala Region, while 15
schools are spread equally among the Bophirima, Central and Southern Regions
respectively.

The renovations include among others, removal and replacement of old worn
out roof trusses and ceilings, new internal and external plasterwork and
painting of walls, electrical re-wiring and tubing of classrooms.

The Department has also re-advertised tenders for seven additional schools
to be renovated in the Bojanala Region. After tender adjudication and awarding
of tenders, contractors are expected to be on site at these schools by the end
of this month.

In addition, the Department has budgeted R304,175 million towards day to day
maintenance, preventative maintenance and renovations to other provincial
buildings in the current financial year.
