Continuing to act on its mandate on locating the whereabouts of those who
disappeared under mysterious circumstances, the National Prosecuting
Authority's (NPA) missing persons' task team has uncovered further human
remains.
The excavation process had been under way for two days when the team,
working at a site where unidentified persons were buried, discovered the
remains of two young males with multiple bullet wounds.
The location of the site is outside Rustenburg in the North West province.
The team is working on information and/or leads that the site could be where
four to five Umkhonto we Siwe (MK) cadres were buried. They were said to have
been killed by members of the former Western Transvaal Security Branch in 1986
and one other by the former Bophuthatswana police in an ambush in Tlhabane in
1985.
These remains will be subjected to forensic examination with a view to
establish whose remains they were as well as locating their next of kin.
The NPA will be conducting ongoing investigations and further excavations at
the site.
