Rasmeni to address traditional health practitioners

10 August 2006

Mafikeng: About 1 500 delegates accompanied by traditional delegates will
converge at Barolong Recreational Hall at 09h00, in a two-day workshop starting
from, 14 to 15 August 2006, at Ratshidi Recreational Hall in the Central
District.

This two-day interactive workshop is aimed at the following:

1. to explore policy and capacity required for the inclusion of traditional
medicine in the healthcare services delivery of the country
2. to share lesson's learnt at the Benoni National Workshop on traditional
medicine
3. to look at mechanisms or protocols for protecting traditional medicine
knowledge
4. to look at the role of the province in the institutionalisation and
operationalisation of traditional medicine
5. to review the implementation of the legislation for the practice of
traditional medicine i.e. Traditional Health Practitioners Act.

"The department has initially formed a strong partnership with Traditional
Health Practitioners and I believe after this informative session we will come
up with a plan for institutionalisation and operationalisation of traditional
medicine; a work plan for protection of traditional medicine knowledge; a work
plan for promotion of research and development of traditional medicines as well
as a work plan for a formal relationship between government and traditional
health practitioners.

We are aware that previously there were those traditional healers who used
to claim that they are healing diseases such as HIV and AIDS whilst they were
in fact reaping from the poor. We are now consolidating on our relationship
with traditional healers with a view to uproot those 'fly by night traditional
healers' who steal from the poor," concluded MEC Nomonde Rasmeni.

Members of the media are invited to this informative session.
