N Pandor to open exhibition on S Biko, 8 Oct

Minister Pandor to open an exhibition on the life and work of
Stephen Bantu Biko at the Department of Education in Pretoria

4 October 2007

The Minister of Education, Naledi Pandor, will on Monday, 8 October 2007, at
10h00, open an exhibition on the life and work of Stephen Bantu Biko, the
remarkable leader of the Black Consciousness Movement, at the Department of
Education, Sol Plaatje House, Pretoria.

The exhibition is entitled 'Biko: The Quest for True Humanity' and
represents Biko's life struggle against the inhumanity of the apartheid system,
reflected in his thoughts and ideas on politics and humanity.

This exhibition, which has been developed in partnership with the Apartheid
Museum and the Steve Biko Foundation, is one of the first major exhibitions on
the life and work of Steve Biko. It marks the commemoration of the thirtieth
anniversary of his death in detention. The Department of Education has also
this year produced a commemorative book, entitled Footprints in the Sands of
Time, which pays homage to the roles played by a number of our struggle heroes,
including Albert Luthuli, OR Tambo, Robert Sobukwe and Steve Biko.

Steve Biko is a towering figure in the history of our country, despite his
short life. Through this exhibition we remember the life of one of our great
heroes, and hope that this exhibition will encourage debate and reflection on
the life and work of Steve Biko and the continued relevance of his ideas in
South Africa today.
