Minister Pandor to address the conference on Community
Engagement in Higher Education at the Protea Hotel President

The Minister of Education, Mrs Naledi Pandor will on Monday, 4 September
2006, at 19h00 deliver a keynote address at the conference on Community
Engagement in Higher Education at the Protea Hotel President, Bantry Bay in
Cape Town.

The overarching goal of the conference is to promote an enabling environment
for the conceptualisation and implementation of community engagement (CE) in
South Africa’s Higher Education.

Its specific goals are:

* to promote dialogue among senior academics and local authority or
community business leaders regarding regional development through teaching,
learning and research
* to explore the implications of community engagement for Higher Education
Institutions (HEI) Governance and Management
* to explore the potential of Partnerships as a vehicle for community
engagement
* to explore the potential of community engagement in teaching and
learning
* to explore the potential of community engagement through Research
* to identify the Enabling Mechanisms for and key challenges to CE in HE
* to identify critical issues for Managing the Quality of community
engagement
* to develop strategies and recommendations for the implementation of CE.

Also to attend the conference is the Premier of the Western Cape Province,
Mr Rasool Ebrahim and the MEC for Education in the Western Cape, Mr Cameron
Dugmore.
